TLDR Alopecia areata patients often have autoimmune disorders, especially thyroid issues.
This study investigated the prevalence of autoimmune disorders in 200 patients with alopecia areata, aged 18 to 65. It found that 25% of these patients had an autoimmune disorder, with hypothyroidism being the most common, affecting 15% of participants. Other identified conditions included vitiligo (5.5%), systemic lupus erythematosus (2.5%), hyperthyroidism (2%), and psoriasis (1.5%). The study highlights the significant association between alopecia areata and autoimmune disorders, emphasizing the need for screening, particularly for thyroid-related conditions, in patients with alopecia areata.
