TLDR Athletic trainers are crucial in spotting and managing eating disorders in athletes.
Athletic trainers (ATs) are vital in identifying and managing feeding and eating disorders in athletes, who are at higher risk than the general population. These disorders can have severe consequences, including death, especially in cases like anorexia nervosa. ATs, often the first to notice signs due to their regular interactions with athletes, work within a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, dietitians, and mental health specialists to provide comprehensive care and ensure a safe return to play. They face challenges in distinguishing disordered behaviors, particularly in sports with aesthetic or weight classifications. ATs are encouraged to implement referral and treatment policies, focusing on prevention and education for coaches and athletes to mitigate risks and long-term effects.
