TLDR Early and precise nutritional intervention is crucial for managing anorexia nervosa.
This editorial in "Nutrients" discusses the severe somatic complications and nutritional management of anorexia nervosa (AN), a highly lethal psychiatric disorder affecting 1.4% of women and 0.2% of men. The publication highlights the importance of early and precise nutritional intervention to manage extreme undernutrition and associated complications such as cardiovascular dysfunction, liver abnormalities, renal issues, and bone demineralization. Effective treatment requires stabilizing the patient's nutritional state, often starting with enteral nutrition, and gradually increasing caloric intake to avoid refeeding syndrome. The article emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary approach, including psychiatric care, to improve patient outcomes.
