The Aqualon SLT: A Novel Device for Measuring Hair Stiffness and Lubricity

    K. Abraham Vaynberg, M Nall
TLDR The Aqualon SLT device measures hair stiffness and slipperiness to evaluate hair treatments.
The Aqualon SLT was a novel device developed to measure changes in hair stiffness and lubricity, essential for evaluating hair treatments. It used a system of pins on free rotating bearings, operating in both rotating and stationary modes. By threading a hair tress through the pin assembly, the device measured the total work required to pull the hair through, which was then de-convoluted into apparent stiffness and lubricity. The data could be further reduced to an apparent friction coefficient. This device demonstrated its utility in predicting and understanding the effects of various hair treatments.
