TLDR CAL-PDT is safer and more effective for treating actinic keratosis on the scalp.
The study compared the long-term efficacy and safety of methylaminolevulinate (MAL)-PDT with and without prior application of topical calcipotriol (CAL) for treating actinic keratosis (AKs) on the scalp in 20 patients. CAL-PDT showed higher AK clearance rates than conventional PDT at 3, 6, and 12 months, with significant differences (p < 0.001). Grade I AKs had similar responses initially, but CAL-PDT showed significant improvement at later stages. Grade II AKs improved more with CAL-PDT at 3 months. CAL-PDT was deemed safe and more effective, suggesting CAL pre-treatment enhanced PDT efficacy, though larger trials were recommended for confirmation.
