TLDR Androgenic alopecia (AA) in Indian women is rarely reported, with varying severity and patterns, and hair pull tests and trichograms help understand it better.
In 2013, a study was conducted to investigate androgenic alopecia (AA) in women from an Indian perspective. The study included 35 women presenting with AA. The classification of AA was attempted across Ludwig and Norwood guidelines. The results showed that 16 women had grade I, 10 had grade II, and 1 had grade III Ludwig classification. Additionally, 6 women had Christmas tree baldness, with 1 each of fronto-parietal and male pattern baldness. The hormonal profile investigations were inconclusive, but the hair pull test and trichogram were found to be helpful in understanding the sequence in AA in women. The study concluded that AA has infrequently been reported, particularly in India and in Asia in general.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
