TLDR Hair loss is mainly due to genes and hormones, and can be treated with minoxidil and finasteride. Excessive hair growth is linked to certain disorders and can be managed with hormonal therapy and laser hair removal.
In the chapter "Androgenic Alopecia and Hirsutism" from Schachner and Hansen’s Pediatric Dermatology, the authors discussed the causes and treatments of these two conditions. Androgenic alopecia, a form of hair loss, was explained as being primarily caused by genetic factors and hormonal imbalances. The authors noted that treatments such as minoxidil and finasteride had shown effectiveness in managing this condition. Hirsutism, characterized by excessive hair growth, was linked to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome and certain adrenal disorders. Treatment options for hirsutism included hormonal therapy and physical methods like laser hair removal.
