TLDR Androgenetic alopecia may increase the severity of COVID-19.
A cross-sectional study conducted at the Pak Emirates Military Hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, from February to August 2021, investigated the correlation between androgenetic alopecia and the severity of COVID-19. The study included 227 COVID-19 patients, with 161 males and 66 females. The degree of alopecia was assessed using the Hamilton-Norwood Scale for men and the Ludwig Scale for women, while COVID-19 severity was measured using the CT severity score. Results showed that 80.7% of males and 51.5% of females had some degree of alopecia. The study concluded that a high frequency of androgenetic alopecia in severely ill COVID-19 patients suggests that androgens play a significant role in the severity of the disease.
