TLDR Amyloid proteins can cause rare hair loss by depositing in the scalp.
This document discusses a case report of amyloid-associated alopecia in a 65-year-old woman with systemic amyloidosis in remission, emphasizing the challenges in diagnosing this rare scalp manifestation due to its nonspecific features. A biopsy confirmed amyloid deposits around hair follicles, and the literature review reveals that this condition is mostly reported in older females and can precede systemic amyloidosis diagnosis. Despite treatments like bortezomib, dexamethasone, and cyclophosphamide showing partial hematologic responses, they did not significantly improve alopecia. The study suggests that early detection and management could be enhanced through careful dermoscopic and histopathologic examination.
