TLDR Medroxyprogesterone injections caused hair regrowth in some dogs with alopecia X.
The study investigated the use of medroxyprogesterone acetate to treat alopecia X in Pomeranian dogs. Eight neutered Pomeranians with alopecia X for 1-2 years were divided into two groups: the first group of five dogs received 5 mg/kg of the medication every 4 weeks for four injections, and the second group of three dogs received 10 mg/kg under the same conditions. The dogs underwent monthly physical examinations and various tests. Results showed that two dogs from the first group experienced partial hair regrowth (about 40-60%), and in the second group, one dog had partial and another had complete hair regrowth two months after the study ended. Serum IGF-1 levels, which were expected to increase and stimulate hair growth, remained unchanged in the alopecic and coated Pomeranian dogs, unlike in normal-coated dogs. No adverse effects were reported. Overall, medroxyprogesterone injections led to partial hair regrowth in three dogs and complete regrowth in one out of the eight dogs with alopecia X.
