TLDR Alopecia areata causes negative emotions and stress due to hair loss and emotional triggers.
The study analyzed patient experiences with alopecia areata (AA) using responses from the Alopecia Areata Screening Questionnaire, distributed to 1,141 participants, resulting in 466 comments. Sentiment analysis revealed slightly negative emotional polarity scores, with NHSII participants showing more negativity than NHS, possibly due to age differences. Common themes included emotional/stress-related triggers (26.4%), medical causes (21.5%), and the use of wigs/caps (9.4%). Eyebrow/eyelash loss was noted in 8.4% of comments, and body hair loss in 9.4%. The findings highlight the negative emotions and psychosocial burden associated with AA, emphasizing the impact of emotional and medical triggers, as well as the extent of hair loss and regrowth.
