TLDR A new classification and scoring system is needed for alopecia areata to better assess severity.
This study analyzed 1010 patients with alopecia areata (AA) over 4 years, revealing that 51.7% had terminal hair involvement beyond the scalp, with beard hair frequently affected, especially in males over 18. The current classification and scoring systems were found inadequate for some cases, leading to the proposal of a new morphological subtype, "alopecia subuniversalis," for extensive involvement of scalp, beard, and body hair. The study suggests a composite scoring system to better assess AA severity, considering involvement of beard, eyebrows, and eyelashes.
