TLDR Alopecia areata may be linked to kidney issues, but more research is needed.
This letter to the editor reports a rare case of a 15-year-old boy with alopecia areata (AA) and renal dysgenesis. The boy presented with multiple patchy areas of hair loss on the scalp, and despite treatment with corticosteroids, minoxidil, and dithranol, there was no improvement. Further investigation revealed renal abnormalities, including a left-sided dysplastic kidney and a bulky right kidney with grade 2 renal parenchymal disease. The case highlights the potential genetic and environmental factors involved in AA, as well as its association with renal anomalies, although the connection in this case may be coincidental. The authors suggest further studies to explore a possible genetic link between AA and renal dysgenesis.
