The AI Doctor Will See You Now: Can ChatGPT-4 Be Used to Safely Counsel Patients With Allergic Contact Dermatitis?

This study evaluated the ability of ChatGPT-4 to counsel patients with allergic contact dermatitis based on patch testing results from 67 patients. The AI disagreed with clinicians on the relevance of results in 12 cases (17.9%), often attributing current relevance without evidence of exposure. ChatGPT-4 was less comprehensive than manufacturer’s Patient Information Sheets, listing fewer potential sources and alternative chemical names for haptens. While it can identify products containing specific haptens, ChatGPT-4 lacks the clinical expertise to accurately determine past, current, or future relevance in all cases, highlighting its potential as a supplementary tool rather than a replacement for expert clinical judgment.
