Cutting Costs, Not Care: New Models for Affordable Men's Health Medications

The study examines the cost savings potential of the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company (CPDC) compared to Medicare and GoodRx for medications commonly prescribed for men's health conditions such as erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Analyzing nine drugs, the study found that CPDC could reduce costs significantly, with total Medicare spending on these drugs in 2022 being $970 million, while CPDC's costs for 30-, 60-, and 90-count supplies would have been $760 million, $447 million, and $340 million, respectively. CPDC was cheaper than Medicare for most drugs, especially for long-term treatments, and also generally cheaper than GoodRx, except for certain doses of paroxetine and tamsulosin. The findings suggest that adopting transparent, low-cost pharmacy models like CPDC could enhance medication adherence and lower financial barriers for patients.
