TLDR Hair transplant techniques improved, but cell therapy showed promise despite challenges.
As of 2005, advancements in hair transplantation for androgenetic alopecia focused on optimizing harvesting techniques and efficiently relocating hair to achieve aesthetic coverage. The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique had not been perfected and could cause significant damage to the limited donor hair resource, serving as an alternative rather than a replacement for Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Cell therapy for hair loss showed great promise, particularly follicular cell transplantation, which could potentially address the limitations of donor hair supply. However, while animal research supported the concept, human studies revealed inconsistencies and issues with cell reproducibility.
