TLDR For better medication adherence in benign prostatic hyperplasia treatment, tamsulosin and finasteride should be packaged together and taken at the same time.
In 2015, a study was conducted to analyze the differences in medication adherence in the method of administration of tamsulosin and finasteride combination therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia. The study involved 60 patients who needed the combination therapy, with 30 patients having both drugs packaged together (Group A) and the other 30 having the drugs individually packaged (Group B). The International Prostatic Symptom Score (IPSS) was checked at the start, after 4 weeks, and after 8 weeks. The results showed that drug compliance in the first 4 weeks for Group A and B was 82.6% and 93.3% for tamsulosin (p=0.033), and 80.1% and 93.3% for finasteride (p=0.042). In the last 4 weeks, it was 80.6% and 93.7% for tamsulosin (p=0.013), and 79.5% and 93.7% for finasteride (p=0.002). The study concluded that to enhance drug compliance in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, both tablets should be prescribed together in one package to be taken at one time.
