TLDR Early diagnosis and lifelong zinc supplementation are crucial for treating acrodermatitis enteropathica effectively.
This case report describes a two-year-old female with acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE), a hereditary zinc deficiency disorder, who was initially misdiagnosed with tinea corporis and psoriasis. Despite treatment with antifungals and corticosteroids, her skin lesions persisted. A low serum zinc level confirmed AE, and treatment with zinc sulfate led to complete healing of the skin lesions within two weeks. The report emphasizes the importance of considering AE in similar cases, even with atypical presentations and normal serum zinc levels, and highlights the need for early diagnosis and lifelong zinc supplementation to prevent severe complications.
An infant with a zinc deficiency skin disorder improved with zinc treatment.
