TLDR Diet and gut health may influence acne development.
This study involving 150 participants (75 with acne and 75 controls) explored the relationship between acne vulgaris, dietary habits, and blood zonulin levels. It found that individuals with acne had significantly higher blood zonulin levels, suggesting a link between increased intestinal permeability and acne. However, no direct correlation between zonulin levels and acne severity was observed. Acne severity was associated with the consumption of legumes, while higher zonulin levels were noted in males and alcohol users with acne. The acne group also showed a preference for milk, fast food, and sugary drinks. The study highlights the potential role of diet and intestinal permeability in acne pathogenesis and suggests further research is needed.
