Acitretin: A Good Treatment Option for Hypertrophic Lichen Planus

    Rameshwar Gutte
TLDR Acitretin effectively treats severe hypertrophic lichen planus.
A 48-year-old male with a 15-year history of hypertrophic lichen planus (HLP) experienced significant improvement after being treated with oral acitretin. Previous treatments provided only temporary relief. Acitretin 25 mg twice daily, along with oral hydroxyzine and topical treatments, led to a 30-40% improvement in lesions and reduced itching within 2 weeks. After 2 months, there was a 90% improvement, and the treatment was well-tolerated with minor side effects. No recurrence was reported up to 6 months post-treatment, suggesting acitretin as a viable option for severe HLP cases.
