Acarbose for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

    Christine Kircher, Katherine Smith
TLDR Acarbose may improve PCOS symptoms and fertility, but more research is needed.
The document reviewed evidence for using acarbose in managing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Six primary studies were identified, including three randomized controlled trials and one open-label study. Acarbose showed promise in improving hirsutism, acne, menstrual irregularities, and cardiovascular risk markers in obese women with PCOS by reducing androgen concentrations and increasing androgen binding. Compared to metformin, acarbose induced greater weight loss and similar improvements in menstrual regularity and fertility. However, the studies were limited by small sample sizes and unclear methodologies. Despite positive clinical evidence, more rigorous studies were needed to corroborate these findings.
