A4. Hair loss – surgical and pharmacological treatment
July 2002
in “Journal of cosmetic dermatology”
TLDR Hair loss can be treated with medications like finasteride and surgical methods like hair transplants.
Hair loss, affecting most adult men and some women, can lead to social and psychological issues despite not being pathological. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common type, results from genetic and hormonal factors, but other causes include poor nutrition, alopecia areata, infections, systemic diseases, metabolic or genetic disorders, and drug side effects. Treatment options in 2002 included hormone modifiers like finasteride, dutasteride, and spironolactone, as well as surgical methods such as scalp surgery, excision of bald scalp, tissue expansion, scalp flaps, and hair transplantation, which were continually being refined.
