TLDR Most hypothyroid patients experience dry skin and swelling.
The study conducted in a tertiary hospital in South India from September 2014 to March 2015 examined 56 patients with hypothyroidism, revealing that 83.92% exhibited cutaneous changes. The male to female ratio was 1:4.6, with 66.07% of female patients showing skin-related symptoms. Common symptoms included weight gain and fatigue, while prevalent skin manifestations were xerosis/ichthyosis, pedal edema, facial puffiness, and hair changes. Additionally, hypothyroidism was frequently associated with urticaria, vitiligo, acanthosis nigricans, melasma, and systemic conditions like diabetes mellitus, microcytic hypochromic anemia, and hypercholesterolemia. The study concluded that xerosis/ichthyosis and pedal edema were the most common skin presentations in hypothyroid patients.
