TLDR Platelet-rich plasma treatment significantly increased hair diameter and density, stopped hair fall, and boosted hair growth in men with hair loss, with no reported side effects.
In 2017, a study was conducted on 30 men aged between 20 and 50 years, suffering from androgenetic alopecia Grade III-VII, to determine the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in managing hair loss. The treatment involved six sessions of PRP application on the scalp, with each session spaced 15 days apart. The results, assessed after six months, showed a 39.8% increase in hair diameter and a 39.7% increase in hair density. Independent observers noted an average improvement of 30.2%, while patients' self-assessment reported a mean improvement of 30%. Additionally, 93.3% of patients reported a complete cessation of hair fall by the end of two months, and 66.7% reported an increase in hair growth. The response to PRP was found to be inversely proportional to the duration of alopecia and varied significantly with family history. No adverse effects were reported. However, the study acknowledged limitations such as a small sample size, lack of a control group, and a short follow-up period.
