TLDR Xerosis and wrinkling are common in elderly skin, but some conditions can be harmful.
The study conducted at Dharmapuri Medical College in Tamil Nadu, India, involved 150 participants over the age of 60 and examined geriatric dermatoses. The most common condition observed was xerosis, affecting 96 individuals (33.2%), followed by wrinkling in 84 individuals (29.1%). The study highlighted that while many skin changes due to aging, such as xerosis and wrinkling, were benign, some conditions like chronic actinic dermatitis and malignancies had a significant adverse impact on the elderly. The research emphasized the interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic factors in the aging process of the skin.
