Androgenetic Alopecia
December 2007
TLDR Androgenetic alopecia is a common type of hair loss in men and women, caused by a testosterone byproduct affecting hair follicles, with sensitivity determined by genetics.
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of hair loss, affecting a large percentage of both men and women. It is characterized by a progressive reduction in the diameter, length, and pigmentation of the hair, primarily in the frontal, temporal, and vertex areas of the scalp. This hair thinning is caused by the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a testosterone metabolite, on androgen-sensitive hair follicles. The sensitivity to androgens is determined by genetics and is influenced by the production of DHT through the enzyme 5α-reductase.
