TLDR Stress can cause temporary hair loss, which usually gets better after the stress is gone.
Telogen effluvium is a common cause of non-scarring hair loss, often triggered by stress and typically resolves once the stressor is removed. It is characterized by diffuse hair loss across the scalp, particularly around the temporal, frontal, and occipital areas. Diagnosis can be made through a thorough history and a physical exam with a hair pull test. The exact process of telogen effluvium is unknown, but theories suggest a shift toward the telogen phase of the hair growth cycle due to stress. Treatment involves identifying and addressing the stressor, reassuring the patient that hair density will recover as this condition does not cause permanent hair loss, and providing support services if psychological stressors are involved. Topical minoxidil is not indicated for telogen effluvium but is sometimes used. New treatments like ALRV5XR show promise.
