TLDR 3D printing is increasingly used in plastic surgery and prosthetics, but more research is needed.
3D printing technology has significantly impacted plastic surgery and prosthetic devices by enabling customization, precision, and improved patient outcomes. The review highlights its successful application in various surgical fields, such as cranio-maxillofacial and hand surgery, where it enhances preoperative planning and patient satisfaction. In prosthetics, 3D printing allows for precise replication of body parts, improving functionality. Despite these advancements, challenges like technical limitations, economic considerations, and regulatory issues persist. The review calls for further research, collaboration, and legal reforms to optimize 3D printing's potential in medical applications, emphasizing the need for larger studies and standardized frameworks.
