Two Years of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (2019–2021): Structural Biology, Vaccination, and Current Global Situation

    Waqar Ahmad, Khadija Shabbiri
TLDR Continued vaccine and drug development is crucial due to new virus variants and regional infection spikes.
The document reviewed the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 virus from December 2019 to November 2021, noting over 259 million confirmed cases and more than 5 million deaths worldwide. During this period, approximately 7.7 billion vaccine doses were administered globally. The emergence of new genetic variants of the virus posed additional challenges, as these strains increased the risk for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as cancer and diabetes. Despite a global decline in COVID-19 cases, certain regions like the subcontinent and East Mediterranean experienced rising infections, indicating the need for ongoing vigilance and potential restructuring of vaccines and treatments. The review covered the virus's biology, infection pathways, epidemiology, and the socio-economic impact, emphasizing the importance of continued vaccine and drug development efforts.
