April 2022 in “Der Hautarzt” Microsurgical autologous hair transplantation, specifically follicular unit transplantation, was shown to provide a permanent and natural improvement for androgenetic alopecia in both men and women, as well as for non-active scarring alopecias. The success of this procedure depended on having sufficient donor hair, realistic patient expectations, and individualized surgical planning. The process involved transplanting thousands of follicular units into micro-slits, achieving natural results and increased hair density without damaging existing hair. For progressive androgenetic alopecia, additional medical therapy was recommended to stabilize the condition. The study emphasized the importance of skilled and experienced hair surgeons and warned against the risks associated with surgeries performed by unlicensed or inexperienced personnel. The German Association of Hair Surgeons and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery provided guidelines and education to maintain high-quality standards in hair restoration practices.
