TLDR Low levels of zinc and ferritin may worsen alopecia areata.
This study investigated the role of zinc and ferritin in 40 Iraqi patients with alopecia areata (AA) compared to 65 healthy controls. Results showed that patients with AA had significantly lower median serum levels of ferritin (23.0 μg/L) and zinc (59.5 μg/dl) compared to controls (ferritin: 27.0 μg/L, zinc: 71.5 μg/dl). The study found a significant positive correlation between zinc levels and age, and a negative correlation with lesion size. The findings suggest that low levels of ferritin and/or zinc may contribute to the pathogenesis and severity of AA, with multiple lesions on the scalp being the most common presentation.
