White Piedra: Further Evidence of a Synergistic Infection

Summer R. Youker, Robert J. Andreozzi, Peter C. Appelbaum, Kim Credito, Jeffrey J. Miller
TLDR White piedra is often a co-infection with a specific bacterial infection.
The document reported a case of white piedra, a fungal infection of the hair shaft caused by Trichosporon beigelii, in two sisters from the US. The infection was accompanied by a synergistic coryneform bacterial infection. Although white piedra is not commonly reported in North America, it is important for differential diagnosis of scalp hair concretions. The study provided culture and microscopic evidence of the synergistic infection.
