Regenerative medicine is revisiting the use of stem cells isolated from postnatal tissues due to their lower risk of teratoma formation compared to embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells. Research highlights the therapeutic effects of adult tissue-derived stem cells, which include inhibiting apoptosis of damaged cells through trophic and angiogenic factors, epigenetic modifications via transferred mRNA, miRNA, proteins, and mitochondria, and the presence of very small embryonic-like stem cells (VSELs) with pluripotent characteristics. Recent studies confirm the pluripotency of VSELs and have developed techniques for their in vitro expansion, offering promising potential for regenerative therapies.
