TLDR Taking too much vitamin E caused a young man's blood clotting problems, which improved after he stopped the vitamin E and got treatment.
A 31-year-old man developed coagulopathy, presenting with oral bleeding, melena, and bruising, after taking vitamin E supplements for hair loss and NSAIDs for back pain. Despite only marginally increased serum vitamin E levels, he exhibited deficiencies in multiple coagulation factors due to vitamin E's inhibition of vitamin K-dependent processes. His condition improved with the cessation of vitamin E, administration of vitamin K, fresh frozen plasma transfusions, and other supportive treatments. This case underscores the potential bleeding risks associated with even modest increases in vitamin E levels, especially when combined with NSAID use.
