TLDR Low Vitamin D3 levels are linked to hair loss in female students in South India.
In a case-control study conducted among the student population in South India, researchers found a significant association between Vitamin D3 deficiency and diffuse hair fall. The study included 44 young adults, with 22 participants experiencing hair fall of more than 100 strands a day (cases) and 22 age-matched healthy individuals (controls). The mean age of participants was 20.89 years. Results showed that 81.8% of the cases had Vitamin D deficiency compared to 45.5% of the controls, with a statistically significant difference (P = 0.007). Female students in particular exhibited significantly lower levels of Vitamin D3 in cases compared to controls. The study did not find significant differences in Vitamin D3 levels based on ethnicity or the use of full sleeve clothing, sunscreen lotion, and sun exposure. None of the cases had normal Vitamin D levels, while 4.5% of controls did. The study concluded that there is a significant correlation between low Vitamin D3 levels and diffuse hair fall in female students.
