TLDR Lower vitamin D levels are linked to more severe alopecia areata.
The study at Dhaka Medical College Hospital examined the link between serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels and alopecia areata (AA) severity in 64 subjects, split between AA patients and healthy controls. It found that AA patients had significantly lower vitamin D levels (mean 13.38 ng/mL) than controls (mean 23.16 ng/mL), with 88% of AA patients being vitamin D deficient. There was a significant inverse correlation between vitamin D levels and AA severity, as indicated by the SALT score (r=-0.509, p=0.003). The study concludes that vitamin D deficiency is more common in AA patients and is associated with greater disease severity, though the small sample size and single-center design may limit the findings' generalizability.
