TLDR Vitamin D may help reduce severity and relapse of alopecia areata.
Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disorder affecting 1.7–2% of the global population, characterized by non-scarring hair loss. This review highlights the role of vitamin D in AA, focusing on its immunomodulatory effects and the importance of vitamin D receptor (VDR) in maintaining hair follicle homeostasis. Vitamin D deficiency and altered VDR expression are linked to increased disease severity. Emerging clinical data suggest that vitamin D supplementation and analogs like calcipotriol may help reduce disease severity and relapse rates, offering potential adjunctive therapeutic strategies for AA management.
