TLDR Hair loss significantly affects quality of life, especially for women, in Pakistan.
The study "Using Skindex-29 Scale to Assess The Impact of Androgenetic/Patterned Hair Loss on Quality of Life of Patients in Pakistan" involved 300 patients (150 males and 150 females) with androgenetic alopecia (AGA)/female patterned hair loss (FPHL). The Skindex-29 questionnaire was used to assess the impact of alopecia on their quality of life. The mean age of participants was 41.6 ± 12.4 years, with most patients (40.7%) having grade-1 severity of alopecia and a disease duration of 1-5 years (37.3%). The study found that gender and disease duration were statistically significant (p=0.001 and p=0.013 respectively) in affecting the quality of life. The Skindex-29 scale was found to be effective in assessing the quality of life in AGA/FPHL patients, with females being more severely affected than males.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

A 26-year-old with extreme male pattern baldness saw hair regrowth after 6 months using Minoxidil, Finasteride, microneedling, Nizoral, a vitamin complex, biotin, and a shampoo with baicapil. Continuation of treatment is necessary to maintain results; stopping may lead to hair loss, making a hair transplant a potential future option.
