TLDR Female representation in dermatology is stable, but minority representation is low and needs improvement.
The study examined trends in gender and ethnicity among dermatology residents and fellows from 2006 to 2018, revealing that female representation in dermatology residency remained stable at around 60%, with increases in procedural dermatology and dermatopathology. However, underrepresented minority (URM) representation in dermatology residency was consistently below the national average, increasing slightly from 8.2% to 9.3%, while URM fellowship representation decreased from 9.5% to 3.1%. The study highlighted the need for increased efforts to address barriers for URMs in pursuing dermatology subspecialties and emphasized the importance of mentorship programs and initiatives to improve diversity in the field.
