January 1980
in “Dermatology”
TLDR Cyproterone acetate was effective in treating acne, hirsutism, and alopecia with few side effects.
In a study conducted 44 years ago, 60 women with an average age of 25 who suffered from hirsutism, acne, and alopecia were treated with cyproterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol for a period ranging from 3 to 39 months. The treatment was found to be 94% effective for acne, 85% effective for hirsutism, and 55% effective for alopecia. These outcomes were consistent with those reported in previous studies. The study also found no correlation between the severity of the conditions or levels of certain hormones and the success of the treatment. Side effects were infrequent and similar to those associated with estrogen-containing contraceptives.
