TLDR Canine acral lick dermatitis is a complex skin issue in dogs caused by excessive licking, often needing various treatments.
Canine acral lick dermatitis was a complex syndrome in companion animal dermatology, characterized by skin lesions from intense licking, often leading to alopecia and other skin issues. It was more common in large male dogs and had a multifactorial etiology, including organic causes like bacterial pyoderma and psychogenic factors such as anxiety. Diagnosis required excluding similar skin diseases and involved various tests. Treatment included mechanical restraint, antimicrobials, and addressing underlying causes, with psychogenic cases needing behavioral management and possibly psychotropic medication. Alternative therapies were considered when standard treatments failed.
