TLDR The tumescent technique improves hair micrografting by providing lasting anesthesia, reducing bleeding, and increasing patient comfort.
Over a 2.5-year period, a study involving 50 hair restoration procedures demonstrated that the tumescent technique significantly improved hair micrografting. This method provided long-lasting anesthesia without the need for repeated injections, minimized bleeding during the operation, and reduced postoperative bruising and discomfort. By injecting a large volume of dilute local anesthetic, the technique allowed for immediate harvesting of the donor site and reduced bleeding in the recipient area after a 20-minute delay for vasoconstriction. The study concluded that the tumescent technique is beneficial for patient comfort and reducing surgical complications, recommending its routine use in hair micrografting and other cosmetic surgeries.
