The Regenerative Medicine in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: The Most Important Innovations in the Clinical Application of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Marco Tatullo, Massimo Marrelli, Francesco Paduano
TLDR Mesenchymal stem cells are key to future tissue regeneration in oral surgery.
Regenerative medicine in oral and maxillofacial surgery focused on using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to regenerate, repair, or replace tissues. Since 1990, advancements included growth factors, platelet concentrates, biomaterials, scaffolds, and autologous tissues. MSCs, derived from adult patients, overcame ethical issues and were seen as the future of regenerative medicine due to their potential and accessibility, particularly from the oral cavity. The goal was to regenerate whole organs or biological systems using stem cells, innovative scaffolds, and nano-engineering.
