TLDR Dr. Russell Knudsen's system classifies hair grafts by class, shape, and size for clearer communication in hair restoration surgery.
In 1997, Stough and Bondar discussed the need for a standardized graft classification system in hair restoration surgery, which was proposed by Dr. Russell Knudsen. The Knudsen nomenclature system includes three essential elements: class, shape, and size, allowing for precise communication among physicians and accurate comparison of surgical methodologies and outcomes. The system defines standard grafts as having a donor diameter of 2 mm or greater, minigrafts as less than 2 mm, and micrografts as one or two-haired grafts, regardless of shape or insertion method. Stripgrafts are defined by length and width, being greater than 10 mm in length. This proposed nomenclature aimed to resolve the imprecise and varying descriptions of graft terminology in the literature, facilitating clearer communication and better understanding of surgical results for both surgeons and patients.
