TLDR Onychomatricoma is a unique nail tumor, not related to other hair-related tumors.
The study investigated Onychomatricoma (OM), a rare benign nail tumor, and its similarities to hair follicles. By examining 6 OM cases with specific keratin antibodies, researchers found that hair keratins in OM were expressed in a pattern similar to the normal nail matrix. The study identified new histopathological and immunohistochemical features, categorizing OM's histological presentation into two main patterns: lobulated or foliated, and "glove-finger" mono- or multidigitate. It concluded that OM is not a variant of other pilar tumors and proposed the concept of an epithelial onychogenic tumor with onychogenic mesenchyme to better understand OM's nature. Despite this, the term OM remains in use due to its established recognition.
