TLDR Syringomas likely start in the upper dermis and form distinct luminal structures.
The study conducted a stereographic analysis of syringomas to understand their biological characteristics. It reconstructed the 3-D architecture of epithelial tumor nests and luminal structures in skin lesions. The lesions consisted of spherical- to ovoid-shaped tumor nests interconnected by narrow strands, resembling ginger roots or budding fungi. These nests developed around hair follicles and beneath the epidermis but were not connected to them or to normal sweat glands. The study found that syringomas likely originate in a single focus in the upper dermis, forming lumina as they develop, with peripheral parts becoming discrete. The ratio of lumen volume to tumor nest volume was 0.275±0.037, indicating a consistent ability of syringoma cells to form luminal structures. The study involved 5 samples.
