TLDR Steatocystomas are harmless skin cysts that can vary in size and may sometimes cause itching or pain.
Steatocystomas are benign cysts filled with sebum that arise from the sebaceous follicle, presenting as firm, nontender lesions of varying size and location. They can appear as isolated lesions (steatocystoma simplex), grouped lesions (steatocystoma multiplex), or suppurative variants (steatocystoma multiplex suppurativa). While typically asymptomatic, they can sometimes cause itching or pain and may lead to secondary infections or scarring. This review provides a comprehensive update on the etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, history, epidemiology, and management options for steatocystomas, highlighting the unique features and complications associated with different subtypes.
