TLDR Mealworm farming is a sustainable, low-cost way to produce high-quality protein-rich feed.
Insect farming, particularly of mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), was highlighted as an innovative and sustainable method for producing protein-rich food and feed. Mealworms efficiently convert organic waste into biomass, making them ideal for use in poultry and animal feed. They thrive on a variety of feed products and byproducts, and their life cycle can be influenced by environmental conditions. Mealworms are omnivorous, consuming both animal byproducts and plant materials, and are noted for their high protein and fatty acid content, as well as being rich in zinc and magnesium. The review concluded that mealworm production could provide a low-cost, environmentally friendly method for producing high-quality feed, supporting rural livelihoods and the poultry and fish feed industries.
