TLDR SAD patients show different brain activity patterns, which might help identify the disorder.
The study investigated resting-state functional brain activity in 45 antidepressant-free patients with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) compared to matched healthy controls using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Results showed that SAD patients had significantly increased functional connectivity in 11 of 47 resting-state networks, including visual, sensorimotor, and attentional networks, and higher amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in the visual and right sensorimotor cortex. These findings supported previously reported attentional and psychomotor symptoms in SAD, suggesting that altered functional activity could be a neurobiological marker of the disorder. Further research was recommended to explore cognitive deficits in SAD under task conditions.
