TLDR Spironolactone effectively reduces unwanted hair growth in women with hirsutism.
In a study conducted on 22 hirsute women, 18 completed a 12-month treatment with 200 mg of spironolactone daily. The treatment significantly reduced the mean daily linear growth rates of hair on the face, abdomen, and thigh to 66%, 75%, and 72% of their pretreatment values, respectively. Additionally, the mean hair shaft diameters decreased on various body parts, and daily hair volume production was notably reduced. Some participants experienced midcycle vaginal bleeding, while others had their irregular menstrual cycles regulated. The study concluded that spironolactone was an effective and well-tolerated treatment for hirsutism in women.
